I was waiting at a bus stop, on Monday, when an older man walked up to me. He said, "Hey little sis, can I get a quarter so I can get on the bus?".Well I was about to give him a quarter but fortunately common sense Val intervened. She said, "Hey non-thinking Val, that fool is actually talking on a cell phone while he begs a quarter from you! If he can afford to have a cell phone he ought to be able to pay his own bus fare!".
So I said no. He walked away. Once the bus arrived I noticed that he didn't even use money to get on the bus, he used a transfer.
Thank you common sense Val!

I say it depends on why you give. A quarter might not help the guy but it would help remind myself that others have it worse than me and that I should look out for my fellow man... even if he is a bum.

In general I agree with you. But approaching someone with a cell phone in hand to ask for a handout is a little problematic.
Generally though I'm pretty generous to people in need.
Val - I went to an HBCU for undergrad so we were in "THE HOOD". Folks were always asking for money. So we'd ask them what did they need it for. If they said I'm hungry, then we would tell them we'd get them a burger. If they say no thanks, they wanted alcohol..When people really need it most of the time you'll know. But alot of the people begging for money need to get on their grind. America is becoming haves and have nots. You can't beg from people that don't have anything!!!

Well said. I don't mind helping someone in need but I can't afford to give money to a grown man on a cell phone. At least put the cell phone in your pocket!
Smart move Val - you've graduated from having "Common Sense" to having "Street Sense".
(Although I'll usualy help anyone at anytime.)
