Hey track & field fans: Gay beats Bolt!

Earlier today in Stockholm, Sweden, American sprinter Tyson Gay defeated Usain Bolt of Jamaica in the 100 meters. Gay's time was 9.84 seconds to Bolts second place finish in a time of 9.97. Today's loss was the first for Bolt, who holds the 100 meter record (9.58 seconds), after 14 consecutive wins.

So it looks like Bolt is not invincible after all. Go Tyson! Check out the race below.

My favorite athlete: Jessica Ennis

Jessica is from England and she is the current world pentathlon and heptathlon champion. She also competes in individual events. She turned pro in 2005. I have high hopes for her at the 2012 Summer Olympics in London.

Jessica is my favorite athlete because she is so good in so many different events.

Val's week in review

The British Parliament selected a Black woman, Rev Rose Hudson-Wilkin, as the new speaker's chaplain in the House of Commons, becoming the first black woman to hold the position. The House of Commons is Parliaments equivalent of Congress here in the U.S. Read more here



Kim Kardashian has apparently moved on from her brake-up with New Orleans Saints player Reggie Bush. She's now dating the Dallas Cowboy's Miles Austin. That's Miles above hiding behind Kim's big booty. I wonder if White guys resent Kim for only dating Black guys?

Gone fishing.

Today about 1.5 million unemployed Americans will have their unemployment benefits end. Congress passed a bill to extend the benefits yesterday but the Senate did not. So what do you think the Senate is doing starting today? They are going on vacation of course. They'll be back in a two weeks.


Ashton Purvis, 18, this week won the Gatorade girls national track and field athlete of the year. The award honors athletic and academic excellence. Ashton this year had the best time in the nation among high school girls in the 200 meters, 22.90 seconds. She also won the 100 meters at the California scholastic federation state championships.

Ashton attended St. Elizabeth High School in Oakland, Ca. She beat out more than 457,000 high school girls track and field athletes nationwide for Wednesday’s award. Ashton who will attend the University of Miami is now a finalist for the Gatorade Female High School Athlete of the Year award, to be presented at a pre-ESPY Awards ceremony in Hollywood in two weeks.

Congratulations to Ashton. She should be very proud of herself. I have a feeling we will be hearing more about Ashton as the 2012 Summer Olympics in London approach.

400 meter World Champion Sanya Richards-Ross was out last week with an Achilles injury but says she may run in Eugene Saturday.

And speaking of track and field; if you are a track fan don't miss the PreClassic meet from Eugene, Oregon tomorrow, July 3, on NBC. Air time is 4:30 pm eastern/ 1:30 pm pacific.

The U.S. Outdoor Track and Field Championships began yesterday in Des Moines, Iowa. You can watch the events this Saturday and Sunday, June 26 and 27, beginning at 3p.m. eastern time both days on Universal Sports. The Championships will also be broadcast on NBC. Check your local listings for those times.

Hey Track Fans!

For all of the track and field fans, like me, out there. There will be two, that's right, two televised track meets today.

First up is the NCAA Division 1 Championships from Eugene, Oregon at 1 p.m./ eastern on CBS. Then the pros go at it from New York in the Adidas Gran Prix meet at 4 p.m./ eastern on NBC. Don't expect to see sprinters Tyson Gay or Usain Bolt, both are injured. But it's still going to be a great meet with sprinters like Allyson Felix in the house running the 200m and Meseret Defar running a rare 1500m race.

Update: If you missed the NBC broadcast of the Adidas Gran Prix meet from New York, Universal Sports Network has been re-broadcasting the meet since last night every few hours. Check the Universal Sports site for times.

Track and Field is back!

So, the outdoor track and field season is finally here! Track is my favorite sport. Its the only sport that I can sit and watch a whole event. Anyway to mark the start of the season I thought I'd list my favorite track athletes.

Presenting the dumbest man in sports: LaShawn Merritt

A reigning Olympic sprint champion from Virginia who emerged as a star at the 2008 Summer Games faces a two-year competition ban after testing positive for an anabolic steroid he said he consumed unknowingly in an over-the-counter male enhancement product.

LaShawn Merritt, 23, the 400-meter Olympic gold medal winner in Beijing, on Thursday said he was "deeply sorry" for using a product for "personal reasons" that caused him to flunk three drug tests since last October.

So let me get this right. LaShawn Merritt was busted for using an over the counter drug to make his penis larger? Yep, that's what happened. One of the ingredients in this male enhancement product is a substance banned in international track and field. So LaShawn more than likely has lost his career because he was trying to have a larger penis.

Didn't anyone tell LaShawn that those male enhancement drugsd don't work? If they did everyone would know, trust me. This definitely makes LaShawn the dumbest man in sports, at least for now.

Lolo tops the world, again!

Track star Lolo Jones defended her Track and Field indoor 60 meter hurdles World Championship crown by winning this years championship in Doha, Qatar yesterday.

Lolo also set an American and indoor championship record running the race in 7.72 seconds (the third best time in history). Lolo is the first woman ever to win the World Championship in this event in successive years.

It looks like Lolo's 2010 season is off to a great start.
