Alicia at the very beginning of her career. I have this as a framed poster.
Alicia Keys turns 30 years old today! Alicia has been my favorite singer for a very long time and except for a little tiff I had with her about something that I won't go into now, I absolutly adore her and think that beside being a stunning beauty she is a true talent.
So, somehow I have never realized that two of my favorite singers have the same birthday. It truly boggles my mind that I didn't know that Aaliyah and Sade share today as their birthdays. Aaliyah was born on this day in 1979, she would have been 32 today. And Sade was born on this day in 1959.
So today I remember Aaliyah and all of the music that she left us and celebrate Sade and all of the music that she is still giving us.
Actress Halle Berry turned 44 this past Saturday. She will also cover the supposedly very important September Vogue. Apparently Halle is only the second Black woman ever to cover the famed September issue of Vogue. Naomi Campbell was the first, September 1989. Been a while hasn't it.
I have given up on Vogue long ago. So it really means nothing to me that Vogue is being covered by a Black woman next month. I won't be buying that issue just as I won't be buying any other issue of Vogue. Maybe that will change if Vogue and the fashion industry it covers ever decide to become truly diverse and feature Black and other women of color routinely.
I don't know what to say about Mariah. She spent the first part of her career distancing herself from being a Black artist. Then when things got a little rough she 'came home'.
She's dabbled in acting, sometimes with good results and sometimes bad. Although, speaking of bad, I think it's time we forgive her for Glitter. After all she was going through a nervous breakdown at the time. And lately she's given some decent acting performances.
Anyway, Mariah really set herself up well though with her first hit Vision of Love. I'm not sure that she will ever top that. It is a classic as far as I'm concerned. Happy birthday Mariah.
I've lost the use of my heart But I'm still alive Still looking for the life The endless pool on the other side It's a wild wild west I'm doing my best
I'm at the borderline of my faith, I'm at the hinterland of my devotion In the frontline of this battle of mine But I'm still alive
I'm a soldier of love. Every day and night I'm soldier of love All the days of my life
I've been torn up inside (oh!) I've been left behind (oh!) So I ride I have the will to survive
In the wild wild west, Trying my hardest Doing my best To stay alive
I am love's soldier!
I wait for the sound (oooh oohhh)
I know that love will come (that love will come) Turn it all around
I'm a soldier of love (soldier of love) Every day and night I'm a soldier of love All the days of my life
I am lost But I don't doubt (oh!) So I ride I have the will to survive
In the wild wild west, Trying my hardest Doing my best To stay alive
I am love's soldier!
I wait for the sound
I know that love will come I know that love will come Turn it all around
I'm a soldier of love I'm a soldier
Still waiting for love to come Turn it all around (4x)
I'm a soldier of love I'm a soldier
Still waiting for love to come Turn it all around (3x)
Still waiting for love to come
