Detroit --Former Detroit Mayor Kwame Kilpatrick was indicted this afternoon (Wednesday, June 23) on allegations of taking at least $640,000 from his nonprofit foundation for his mayoral campaign and travel, car leases, college tuition, anti-bugging equipment and yoga lessons.
A federal grand jury returned an indictment charging Kilpatrick, currently serving time in a northern Michigan prison, with 19 fraud-related charges. They include 10 counts of mail fraud, three counts of wire fraud, five counts of filing false tax returns and one count of tax evasion.
Kilpatrick is to be arraigned on the charges July 13. The most serious charges carry a maximum penalty of 20 years in prison. - The Detroit News
If you thought former Detroit Mayor Kwame Kilpatrick's major crime was lying under oath about an affair with his former chief of staff you're wrong. Kwame was doing some serious dirt while in office and the feds are about to put him away for a long, long time.
What a shame this has been for the city of Detroit. The people of Detroit were so proud of their young mayor. He was just 31 when elected. Everyone talked about his potential. I remember seeing a few interviews including one on 60 Minutes. The people of Detroit for once seemed optimistic. And now all that's left are indictments, jail time and a city in financial ruin. What a shame.
Kwame has a bright future behind him.
