There are always attacks on Black women in the media. So I was really happy to come across this story on the blog Field Negro. The young woman above is Katie Washington and she's from Gary, Indiana. She will graduate in a few weeks from Notre Dame University and she will be the valedictorian. She will also be the first African American valedictorian in Notre Dame's history. Not only that but in the fall Katie will be attending Johns Hopkins University where she will pursue both a medical degree and a Ph.D.
So congratulations, Katie! And good luck in grad school. Not that you will need any luck.

Yes. I saw and read about this story as well. First to accomplish this honor in the history of the University. I can only imagine how proud she is of herself.
Then, she's homegrown.
@Don
Yep, she must be very proud. I know I am.
The new pride of Gary
I just can't get enough of her story. I'm sure she's going to do very well..I'm proud of her too.

Yeah and from what I hear they need something or someone to be proud of in Gary these days.
@bayoucreole
I have a feeling she will go on to do great things.
What a beautiful child, look at that smile!!!
She reminds me of my own daughter.
There are few things that warm my heart like seeing a strong, intelligent, beautiful, black young woman.
