I first watched American Idol several years ago during its first few seasons. During those years the show was incredibly diverse. There where Black people, Boricuas, Asians, Mexican Americans, people of Middle Eastern decent, Hawaiians, people of mixed ancestry and more. it was great. American Idol was the most diverse show on network TV.
Fast forward to last night. The ladies were performing and out of eight women there was one Woman of Color. A Black girl who I think is about 16 or 17 years old. The rest of the women were White.
I don't know the ethnic make-up of the men since last night's show was the first I watched for more than 5 minutes. But I just have to wonder after auditioning thousands of women from all over the country how it is they could only find one Woman of Color to make it this far? Or is this some sort of intentional thing done to get a ratings boost? Did they do some sort of focus group thing and found that people had a problem with so much diversity?
What ever the case I am really disappointed that a show that was so wonderfully diverse now looks like almost every other show on network TV.

Your answer is in your question Val.
I boycott most programs on TV just for the reasons you said at the end of your post.
I find no value for my life in 90% of the programming on network TV.
Much of the "color" was seen on earlier shows.
The earliest shows were better because only the best were able to make the finals.
What's left are those who couldn't make the field in seasons past.
Since many of the best people of color have already had their shots - this is what you get.
@BigMac
I agree with you. I don't even have cable for that reason. I find that my money is better spent buying films.
@UBJ
I'm pretty sure out of the thousands of people who auditioned they, the judges, could have done better.
I have never watched American Idol. I had to YouTube all Fantasia's performances in order to see 'em.
Honestly, I believe anything involving ratings and money is surrounded by politics anyways.
Of course you already know that though. LOL.
@Don
Wow, so you are one of the few that's never seen Idol. Lol
Yep, politicking and money makes the world go round.
Yeah...
Maybe they are actively seeking more non-ethnic winners.
Kind of like the NBA seeking more white players by drafting those from Europe.
C'mon,
You gotta' know that many people are scared to see everyone thought of as cool being a minority.
Golf, tennis, MX racing, Olympic Winter Games, POTUS, actors, musicians - all the cool slots already belong to minorities.
@UBJ
The NBA comparison def works.
I tell my wife this all the time. We need to becareful what shows we watch in this house. Every show we watch might not have minority characters but if over half of the shows are not diverse we got problems. This year American Idol is not good anyway. Popularity over Substance...
@CO
Diversity on TV seems to be going backwards. There was much more diversity in the 90's.
