Can you name the winner of the Miss America pageant from last year? Of course you can't and neither can I. In fact the only Miss America winner I can name is Vanessa Williams, who won in 1984. So who killed the Miss America pageant? I have no idea but who ever it was did a great job of it.
For decades September was the month the Miss America pageant aired on NBC and was broadcast from its then home Atlantic City, New Jersey. This year the pageant airs not in September but in January, tonight, and on cable TV's TLC. It's home is no longer Atlantic City, it's now Las Vegas.
So did you know it was coming on tonight?
Anyway I suppose with all of the reality shows and other craziness on TV it's really hard for Miss America to compete. Then again all it takes is a little bit of controversy and the Miss America pageant may make a comeback.

Wow! is it realy on today? Thanks for the heads up! I am going to try to catch it. I too remember when Vanessa Williams won. It was a proud day for us Puerto Ricans too! Feeling invisible in the 70s and 80s, the triumph of African Americans during this time was ours too. i stumbled upon your blog and I am enjoying it.

I grew up in New York City and in a very diverse community. So I was always well aware that Puerto Ricans, Dominicans, Cubans and African Americans along with other people of color had the same struggles. So I've felt the same way when I see Boricuas do well too.

I think a few have had successful careers in television but nothing like Vanessa's success.
I remember seeing Vanessa Williams on the cover of a magazine (People Mag, I think), back when I was a young kid, and thinking to myself how pretty she is....
Still feel the same way all these years later.

Yep, V is a beautiful woman and very talented. That's a hard combination to beat.
Funny, she's the only one I can name too and I remember the year only because that's the very first year that I ever paid attention to who won; and the only reason I did then was because that was the very first year I remember thinking that the winner was beautiful.
After all these years, that woman can still use a spanking!!!
