It was revealed last week by the Associated Press that Pope Benedict XVI while a Cardinal allowed a Priest who had been convicted of molesting two boys in Oakland, California to remain in the Priesthood despite pleas from Oakland Bishop John Cummins.
If this is as it appears, how in the world can this Pope have any moral authority? And how can he continue to lead the Catholic Church? Under canon law, modern popes only answer to God, so only Pope Benedict can remove himself. That does not appear likely.
So while this scandal grows millions of Catholics are left in the lurch. It seems to me that if the Pope cares about the church he won't show his love by downplaying this scandal. He'll show it by stepping down as Pope and clearly stating his part in all of this.

The Pope will step down when "Hell Freezes Over",his postion has too much power for him to do the right thing.I too would have more respect for him if he takes responsibility for his lack of leadership.
For as long as I have been living on this Earth I've read about priest who have molested young kids. I have never understood how or why this happens. But it has also made me look at priest differently.
Good question @ If this is as it appears, how in the world can this Pope have any moral authority?
I'm thinking - since the Priesthood was sick and bold enough to commit the offense, they apparently believe themselves to be without moral anyway. I do believe continued pressure on behalf of media coverage will eventually force their hands though.
@BigMac
You're right. It's not going to happen. And it's the church that will suffer. This will be his legacy.
@Don
I really don't think they care about what the media says. They think they are above all of that.
