Amour-propre means literally self-love. But another meaning for it is self-esteem that one has that comes from how others view us. The opposite term would be amour de soi. Which means literally love of self but is a love that comes from within and is not related to how others view us.
It seems that we live in a world where most seek amour-propre and few possess amour de soi.

Humans are social creatures. It would be pretty amazing if most people didn't put a high premium on Amour-propre. As much as we might not like to admit it, how others view us has enormous importance for our own trajectories in life.

I totally agree with you. However, at some point we all should begin to seek love of self (amour de soi) and that should be more important to us than amour-propre. Don't you think?
I truly believe in self love, it's just been awhile since I did it.

Lol, okay.

I totally agree with you. I'm all for self love, but it won't keep you company at night ;)
@?
True. Ha!
This is true. Why do you believe this is the case? Human nature?
@Don
Part human nature part how we're trained. I think in order for us to be apart of the commercialized capitalistic world we have to be trained to see our selves through the eyes of others.
This sets us up to buy our way into being liked and admired. Nice car, nice home, nice clothes and people admire you. And if we believe this we become what America needs, people who spend money blindly. I know this is a very cynical view but it's how I see it.
